January 30, 2020 – Carlton Trail College and Horizon School Division are marking over 10 years of an experiential learning partnership that introduces Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) students to welding safety, theory and techniques. This partnership enables the organizations to expose high school students to trades-based skills and opportunities, with Carlton Trail College providing the facility, machinery and tools and HCI providing hands-on instruction and further connection to opportunities such as Saskatchewan’s Youth Apprenticeship program.
“We know that demand will remain strong for future job opportunities in the trades,” said Deanna Gaetz, Business and Skills Training Manger for Carlton Trail College. “If we can help introduce students to opportunities such as welding while they’re in high school, we hope their interest translates into further education, training or apprenticeship.”
“The support of Horizon School Division and Carlton Trail College makes our welding program possible,” said Cory Popoff, HCI Principal. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience while learning about trades.”
Eligible Grade 11 and 12 students must apply to participate in HCI’s welding courses. During the academic year, course time is scheduled amidst Carlton Trail College’s other trades-based programs that operate out of the facility.
Since the partnership began, over 200 HCI students have participated in welding courses at Carlton Trail College’s trades facility in Humboldt.

Horizon School Division
Horizon School Division No. 205 operates 43 schools across east-central Saskatchewan, with a central office in Humboldt. Horizon spans a geographic area of approximately 30,970 square kilometers, from Bulyea in the south, Wakaw in the north, Foam Lake in the east and Viscount in the west.
