As the College winds-down its 50th anniversary, one final activity saw College representatives and regional artists unveiling two very special art pieces to commemorate the legacy that the institution has had over the past 50 years, while also igniting our commitment to serve the region for the next several decades. A vibrant new mural called “Empowerment Rising” now resides on the north exterior wall of Carlton Trail College’s Humboldt campus, painted by talented regional artist, Kayla Hanson. A meticulously-crafted metal sculpture called “Shaping Knowledge” was also unveiled, created by well-known metal artist and long-time College welding instructor, Murray Cook. As part of the sculpture, College teams also worked with Murray to incorporate a time capsule into the piece that is filled with photos, trinkets, and interesting bits of memorabilia from the past 50 years. Guests in attendance to help unveil these pieces included College Board and staff members, MLA Todd Goudy (bringing greetings on behalf of the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Provincial Government), Elder Michael Desjarlais from Fishing Lake First Nation, representatives from Humboldt Cultural Services and the Humboldt Public Art Committee, Humboldt Collegiate Institute representatives and local citizens. Although many of us may not be here when Carlton Trail College celebrates its 100th anniversary – we hope that these works, activities and memories demonstrate the pride, gratitude and commitment we feel when serving the many communities across our east-central learning region – thank you for being a part of this commemorative journey with us.
