Industry Program Introduces Youth to Careers in the Trades

Mar 01, 2024

To encourage Indigenous youth to explore career opportunities in the trades, an eight-week Explore the Metal Trades program was developed and delivered from our training location in Punnichy.

Students were introduced to three careers needed in regional mining and manufacturing industries: Millwright/Industrial Mechanic, Pipefitter and Ironworker. Practical knowledge was provided, along with exposure to the tools, language and types of work people in these trades do.

Participants also had the opportunity to earn valuable safety tickets such as First Aid/CPR, SCOT Safety, WHMIS and Fall Protection & Confined Space. A 60-hour work experience component was included.

Students who completed the training said that they felt more prepared to seek out related careers in these fields, and supporting employers appreciated opportunities to share the jobs and skills they need to support their work.
