Trades Facility Expansion

Applying skills, theories and training through applied learning.

Technical and Vocational Skills Training

The existing trades training facility in Humboldt provides classroom and shop space to both Carlton Trail College and Horizon School Division secondary students as part of a unique, working arrangement between the institutions.

Not only is this facility vital to the delivery of regionally valued programs such as welding, electrician, industrial mechanics and other skilled trades programming, it also exposes high-school youth to in-demand career opportunities and hands-on training in the trades.

Training for the Future

Since the College’s original trades training facility opened in the 1980s, it has played an important role in preparing skilled workers for the region. Through careful scheduling and efficient use of space, the facility has supported growing training demand for decades. Today, sustained growth in mining, agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and other key sectors is creating an even greater need for skilled and technical training.

To meet that demand, Carlton Trail College is expanding its training capacity through the new BHP Technical Training Centre – a Carlton Trail College facility made possible through significant investments from the Government of Saskatchewan, BHP, and the College. Named in recognition of BHP’s support, the Centre will provide modern, flexible shop and classroom space that strengthens the College’s ability to deliver high-quality, hands-on training aligned with workforce needs.

The expanded facility will help train the next generation of skilled workers, create opportunities for new partnerships and programming, and support the long-term economic growth of east-central Sasktachewan. As training needs evolve, the Centre will ensure Carlton Trail College remains well-positioned to serve learners, employers, and communities across the region.
