Tax Information
A T2202 is an official tuition and enrolment statement that may be used for income tax purposes. These are issued by Carlton Trail College to all students who have paid tuition and fees for qualifying programs.
Carlton Trail College issues T2202’s and T4A’s for tuition, scholarships or other income as required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). These statements are used to certify a student’s eligibility for or restrictions to certain tax incentives. Students may also use these forms to show transfers of tuition and education amounts to designated persons.
Please note T2202’s are generated by the end of February each year, for the prior taxation year (January – December).
- Receiving a T2202 from Carlton Trail College does not guarantee you are eligible for any provincial or federal tax incentives.
- Tuition for programs that start in one calendar year and end in the next, are pro-rated between the two years.
- The tuition amount does not include books, student fees or other materials.
- The months indicated on a T2202 are for each month in the calendar year you were enrolled as a part-time or full-time student.
- Part-time students must attend at least three consecutive weeks of programming, for at least 12 hours of instruction per month, to receive a T2202.
FAQ

Requests for a printed copy will only be accepted after the end of February.
What if the system indicates I don't have a T2202 for the taxation year?
If you are not seeing a T2202 issued for the taxation year, it may be due to one or more of the following:
- The program did not start in the related taxation year. Your T2202 is based on the period of study, not on the tuition payment date.
- The study time is not the minimum required length.
- The tuition was not over $100.
- A T2202 is not applicable to the following programs: English Language Training, Adult Education or Essential Skills programming.
Please note non-credit programs may be included on a T2202, but may not be eligible to be used for income tax purposes.
What if my tuition was waived, paid by a third party or reimbursed through professional development funds?
CRA regulations generally do not permit individuals to claim educational amounts where a benefit, payment, grant, allowance or reimbursement of tuition was received.
Carlton Trail College cannot provide tax advice. Students are responsible for determining if they are eligible for tuition credits, based on their personal circumstances.
To learn more about tuition credits, contact the CRA or a tax professional.
What if a third party (e.g. parents) want to claim the amount on my T2202?
A T2202 is always issued in the name of the student registered for programs and courses at Carlton Trail College.
If you determine that you are eligible to transfer tuition credits to a third party (such as a parent), you can print your T2202 and sign the authorization page to allow you to do so.
Guidelines on transferring tuition credits are available from the CRA.
