February 7, 2022 – BHP and Carlton Trail College look forward to launching the 10^th year of a program delivery partnership that provides scholarships to regional youth pursuing post-secondary education and training in the field of their choosing.

Simon Thomas, Vice President Potash, BHP shared “We are proud to be involved in this program and are excited to celebrate our 10th year working with Carlton Trail College and supporting youth in the region. We look forward continuing to support our youth for years to come.”  

BHP’s Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students from eligible schools and communities located in proximity to the Jansen Project’s site in east-central Saskatchewan. Scholarships are available to high school students graduating in the current year or recent high school graduates under the age of 30 who are attending a recognized post-secondary program for the first time.

Eligible schools, communities and First Nations include: Annaheim; Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation; Day Star First Nation; Englefeld; Fishing Lake First Nation; George Gordon First Nation; Humboldt; Imperial; Kawacatoose First Nation; Lanigan; LeRoy; Muenster; Muskowekwan First Nation; Punnichy; Quill Lake; Raymore; Watrous; Watson; and Wynyard.

Carlton Trail College administers the program on behalf of BHP.

• In 2021, 30 scholarships, each with a value of $2,500, were presented to students from 11 eligible schools and six First Nations communities.
• Since 2013, BHP has awarded $572,500 worth of scholarships to 222 recipients.
• Recipients are determined based on academic standing, community involvement, letters of reference, financial need and insight into community and/or global matters.
• BHP has committed to gender balance by C2025 at all levels of the organization, but also works actively to foster all types of inclusion and diversity (including gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, neurodiversity, etc.). 
• A BHP apprenticeship program is being offered between 2022 and 2026 during the construction period to help develop a pool of talented labour as the project transitions into operations. The apprenticeship program features eight weeks of pre-employment training in Humboldt and Quinton and includes four trades: Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Electrician, Industrial Mechanic (millwrights) and Instrumentation and Control Technician. The target demographic for the program is Indigenous and female workers for representation and gender parity.

Four Saskatchewan Regional Colleges Enter Partnership For New Agriculture Program

January 26, 2022 – Carlton Trail College, Cumberland College, Great Plains College and Parkland College are pleased to announce a new partnership that will allow each institution to deliver the Agricultural Science Certificate program to students within their respective regions.

In this 8-month program, students will learn the fundamental skills necessary for modern agriculture operations with a specific focus on crop production. With courses ranging from record keeping and innovative technology, to practical field skills, graduates will be prepared for a career in the agriculture industry. The program is brokered through Lakeland College and graduates may also choose to continue their education and transfer into the second year of the Crop Technology Diploma program at Lakeland College. 

“The agriculture industry is a key part of our provincial economy and local labour market,” said Kim Lambe, Director of Programs at Great Plains College. We’re thrilled to have established this partnership that will allow us to deliver this long-awaited agriculture programming in our region. We look forward to helping students prepare for a successful career in the high-demand agriculture industry.” 

This program will be delivered in a blended delivery model, where all theory will be live-streamed to each location from an instructor located at Cumberland College’s Melfort Campus. All labs will take place in-person at each regional college.

“We are looking forward to partnering and sharing this program with other regional colleges,” says Chair of Post-Secondary Education at Cumberland College, Jeff Fisher. “The study of agriculture is an important part of our programming at Cumberland. Not only is this a unique offering in the Saskatchewan regional college system, but, more importantly, it is relevant and necessary to the agriculture sector in our province. It is exciting for us to facilitate the delivery and see the program expand through this partnership with three other regional colleges."

The joint program is set to begin in October 2022. Prospective students can apply online to the regional college of their choice.

“Agriculture has long been an economic driver within our east-central region,” said Deanna Gaetz, Business and Skills Training Director at Carlton Trail College. “Working in partnership with other Saskatchewan Colleges is a great way to be able to offer this training, while further developing the knowledge and skills needed for working in this industry.”

"Having an agriculture program at Parkland blends well with our applied Ag Research Farm in Yorkton,” said Jenna Niebergall, Chair, Post-Secondary Education at Parkland College. “Our goal is to expose students to all aspects of agriculture, including applied research."

Carlton Trail College Recognizes 2021 Student Award Recipients

January 12, 2022 – Through the generosity of donors and the support of the Government of Saskatchewan’s Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship (SIOS) program, Carlton Trail College was pleased to distribute 43 scholarships and bursaries totaling $40,250 to student recipients in 2021.

“As the pandemic continued to create financial challenges for students, we’re proud to be able to provide much-needed financial support to our learners, along with acknowledging academic excellence, community involvement and strength of character,” said Amy Yeager, Carlton Trail College President and CEO.

Due to continued pandemic impacts, the College was unable to host an in-person event to acknowledge student award recipients. Instead, recipients and donors are being acknowledged through regional print, radio and digital channels. Congratulatory remarks were also received from the Honourable Gene Makowsky, Minister of Advanced Education.

“Our student award program, supported by our generous donors, empowers our College to reward students for their efforts, inside and outside of the classroom,” said Jennifer Brooks, Carlton Trail College Development and Communications Director. “It not only supports individual achievement, it’s also an investment into our future workforce.”

Carlton Trail College Supports Regional Food Banks

December 16, 2021 – This December, Carlton Trail College is helping individuals who may rely on a food bank, especially those within its learning region in east-central Saskatchewan.

The Humboldt & District Food Bank, Lanigan & District Food Bank, Wadena Food Bank, Watrous Food Bank and Wynyard Food Bank each received funds to assist with the purchase of food and other necessities. An internal food drive is also being supported by Carlton Trail College’s Board and staff members.

“With the holiday season just around the corner, our team felt we could support efforts within our region to help provide food where it may be needed,” said Adrienne Jackson, Carlton Trail College Board Chair.

“This donation is a small way our institution can spread some hope and happiness, and we are grateful to our regional food banks for their efforts in helping make the holidays a littler merrier for those experiencing hardship.”

November 1, 2021 – Effective Friday, December 3, 2021, Carlton Trail College is implementing the Government of Saskatchewan’s The Employers COVID-19 Emergency Regulations. This means anyone accessing Carlton Trail College’s learning locations will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within seven days. 

“To continue to provide the safest possible environment for our staff, students and the communities in which we live and operate, College leadership agreed it is the right decision to implement these emergency regulations,” said Amy Yeager, Carlton Trail College President and CEO.  

For proof of vaccination, Carlton Trail College will recognize: 

• the card issued by the Saskatchewan Health Authority at the time of vaccination; 
• a copy of a vaccination record obtained online through MySaskHealthRecord; 
• records entered into the digital SK Vax Wallet; or 
• a letter of verification from a doctor or pharmacist in Saskatchewan. 

For proof of a negative test result, a self-administered take-home rapid antigen test will not be accepted as valid proof of negative COVID-19 test results. Individuals requiring a negative test result have several private options on the market that will provide a rapid antigen test or a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for a fee. The cost for all proof of negative test results is the responsibility of the individual.

In preparation for College-wide implementation, current Board members, staff and students were required to fill out a form declaring their vaccination status.  

Registration remains open for the College’s many programs, courses and training opportunities. Further information about how to adhere to proof of vaccination or negative testing measures will be communicated to individuals upon registration.  

Individuals registering in the online-only Ed2Go,UGotClass or other, online-only courses that do not require access to College facilities or resources are exempt and do not need to provide proof of vaccination or negative test results.

Carlton Trail College, Conestoga College and Saskatchewan Polytechnic partner to offer Welding applied certificate to 36 learners

July 7, 2021 –Conestoga College, Carlton Trail and Saskatchewan Polytechnic have entered a partnership to offer the Welding applied certificate for free to under-represented groups in the trades including women, Indigenous peoples, newcomers to Canada and persons with disabilities. This program provides students with the basic welding skills required to start a new career and is funded by the Government of Canada.  

Sask Polytech is currently offering the Welding applied certificate to 12 students in Prince Albert and 12 students in Saskatoon. Registration with Sask Polytech is now closed. Carlton Trail College will offer this training to students starting August 1, 2021, at its Humboldt campus.   

 “As an Indigenous woman, I’m excited to be participating in the Welding applied certificate. This is a good opportunity to get my foot in the door and start a new career path,” says Kalene Gardipy, Sask Polytech student. “It’s really inspiring to have a female instructor training the class. This is a great program. I encourage more Indigenous women to apply and enter the trades.”

The Welding applied certificate is a 20-week program, with an additional five weeks of career skills training and an eight-week work placement. Students build their knowledge and skills in operating welding equipment and performing basic welding operations.

“Carlton Trail College is thrilled to be involved in this unique partnership with Conestoga College and Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Training under-represented populations in a skilled trade, along with providing extensive employability skills training and a paid work placement, will add tremendous value to workforce engagement within the province,” says Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross, president & CEO, Carlton Trail College.

“The partnership between Conestoga College, Carlton Trail, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers an incredible opportunity to address a skills shortage in the welding industry,” says Dr. Larry Rosia, Saskatchewan Polytechnic president and CEO. “This program will benefit students who are looking to gain employment as welder apprentices by providing them with welding training, essential skills training and the work experience they’ll require to start a new career.”

Students will build their knowledge and skills in operating welding equipment and performing basic welding operations, including general shop practice and shop safety, oxy/acetylene fusion welding, cutting processes, gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding.

Acceptance into the free Welding applied certificate is based on a combination of student assessment results and a personal interview. Applicants are encouraged to attend an information session in advance and must have their grade 10 to apply.
